3D Stuffed Animal Quilts

Years ago, I don’t remember how long ago, I got this crazy idea to sew a quilts, repurposing stuffed animals. I’ve made these amazing crazy quilts for almost all my grandkids since then. I create a background, sometimes a very complicated background, then I dissect stuffed animals and sew them in the appropriate places. Since I cut the stuffed animals to pieces, dissecting their heads and arms and legs tails etc. from their bodies, it might look rather gruesome. So, I don’t let the grandkids watch. Some quilts were very simple, like the worm in the apple. Most quilts were not simple and took many hours to make, like the fun garden with the picket fence and the dragons with the fantasy landscape.

The quilt to the left is Ben’s. Quick story: This quilt needed a SCUBA diver. So, we drove to the thrift store to look for one. In the store, Ben went one way, I went the other. Soon, Ben yells, “I found one!” I thought to myself, “Sure, it’s probably a naked plastic “KEN”, Barbie’s boyfriend, wearing SCUBA gear.” But it was Mickey! In Ben’s hand was a fabric Mickey Mouse wearing yellow flippers and a blue SCUBA mask! Thrift stores are magic!

I sewed some SCUBA tanks to Mickey’s back and plugged a respirator into his mouth and sewed a lobster’s claw onto his nose for good measure.

I call this —Shark Attack!
